Edith Flora McCallum October 7, 1921 – March 6, 2018   Edith passed away after a brief illness at the Hawkesbury General Hospital. Daughter of the late Neil McCallum and Annie Swail McCallum of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge. She was predeceased by her sister Isabel in 2014. Mourned by her  dear friends Mr. and Mrs. Michael Bennett and family, countless cousins and good friends. Edith graduated as a teacher in 1939 and spent the rest of her working life in the classroom. She taught at a number of local schools, spent 15 years teaching in Gatineau and then returned home to a teaching job in Harrington. She continued to teach in Harrington until her retirement in 1982. She followed the progress of many of her students throughout the years and her concern for their wellbeing was genuine. She was most proud of the fact that many of her students still took the time to write or visit her. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Desforges Funeral Home, 188 rue Principale, Grenville, QC - (819) 242-2113. At Edith’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral. Interment at a later date in the Avoca Cemetery. Condolences may be sent online by visiting www.desforges.ca.

  6. We are so sorry to hear of Edith’s passing. When she retired from teaching in Harrington, I was the lucky one to take her place. As a first year teacher, I sought her wise advice and kind support. Many fond memories of our children with Mike and Mandy’s and Tracey’s were spent together at her lovely farm. Subsequently my mother Margaret discovered they were distant Swail cousins and she continued to enjoy a long friendship with Edith even after her return to the Townships.
    We all cherish the friendships, meals, conversations and joy shared at Edith and Isabel’s farm over the years.
    God bless you Edith. You will be missed.

  15. I met Edith and Isabel in their home several times. What took me there was their care of the tiny cemetery in Pointe au Chene. We talked about old times. I enjoyed our conversations very much. Sad to see them go. My sincere condolences from one old Avoca family to another.
